| Diane Burko was born in Brooklyn and is a Philadelphia-based painter and photographer. For over 30 years she has explored the American landscape in all its vastness. In 1979 Burko flew over the Grand Canyon with James Turrell to take her own aerial photographs which she later transformed into paintings and drawings. She went on to charter flights to investigate and photograph volcanic activity from the air, from Alaska to Costa Rica. Her most recent project is Iceland, the most active volcanic territory on earth. She has received many awards including a Lila Acheson Wallace fellowship and a grant from the Leeway Foundation. She is represented in the collections of The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. |
